   The Little Flower

Chapter 1

Fran peered critically at her face in the mirror as she pinched her checks to bring color to them . Her father was worried about her and there was no way he needed more on his plate then he was already dealing with. She felt as if she couldn’t leave. Something might happen anything could happen.

“Fran are you coming?” Richard called impatiently. She didn’t answer but just kept staring back at her own worried expression in the mirror. She could hear the old wooden door to her room open behind her. Richard came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulders. “Fran?” He asked peering into the mirror in front of her. When Fran didn’t answer he turned her around to look at her face and without a word put his arms around her. Fran burst into tears and hid her face in embarrassment. “I can’t go Richard not now!”

Richard waited for her to calm herself and then spoke. “Fan you know how important this is to father, he put a lot of effort into this occasion.” “Richard not while he is like this I can’t” Fran only this evening he was telling me how much it means to him that you go and that he hopes you won’t stay just because of him.

“What if ,” “Nothing is going to happen “Fan the doctor doesn’t think that there is any current danger and if Father thought that there was he would never have asked you to go.” “Trust us Fan.” Fran sighed bitterly. “Can I see him before we go?” “Of course you should” Richard said smiling.

Fran hurried out of the door and down the long dark wooden corridor from her room to the end of the hall where her Father’s room was. She took a deep breath and pushed the creaking door open. Her father was sitting propped up in the bed by his pillows. His face blighted when he saw her.

“Hey, there my Franny” he said almost brightly. “Stand there next to the window so I can see you.” The room was darkly lit other then the one oil lamp that burnt on the bedside near him. Fran stood near the window where the pale sunlight  bathed her in it’s fading glow. “Aren’t you beautiful just like your mother was.”

Fran smiled  and blushed as she moved away from the window. Are you feeling much better Papa” she asked standing before him. Her Papa smiled as he patted the bed next to him. She sat next to him he smelled of medicine. She hatted that smell.

“Fran you must go and not worry about me” Her father cut her off. Fran I am doing much better the doctor says so and I’m feeling stronger by the say don’t worry about me. You just go and have a good party.”

Fran smiled “alright Father if you think you’ll be aright .” She got up and kissed he on the forehead . “Goodnight”
